Who is Opmantek?

Opmantek is a company formed by the founders of NMIS who are passionate about NMIS and open source software. NMIS was one of the first pieces of software published in open source – way back in 1999 and the founders have 1000’s of ideas to extend it and a commitment to open source.

Why does NMIS need Opmantek?

1. Some organizations require commercial support for NMIS;

2. NMIS with passionate, full time, paid developers working on it is AWESOME. NMIS will do all the things you wanted and loads of things you never thought of.

3. NMIS has 10,000 users and with Opmantek - there is A LOT to come, FAST.

Does this mean NMIS will no longer be free?

No. No . NO!

NMIS will always be free. We developed it that way and it will stay that way.

Take a look at NMIS v8 as an example: a lot of work went into it and it has cost Opmantek US100’s of thousands of dollars on top of the 12 years of effort that has already gone into NMIS and yet it’s still released as free software, zero cost to you.

Are you guys nuts? Why spend money to develop software and then give it away?

Well it sure beats “working for the man”. Opmantek aims to make money through customization and support services. In other words by supplying things many of the community have been asking for, not by selling software.  NMIS is licensed under GPL – we value the open source community - people use the software at zero cost but they send in bug fixes and ideas and enhancements. Fair deal and exactly the concept of open source – we want to sell enough support and customization to continue to see NMIS bloom.

What about onsite services?

Opmantek realizes there are NMIS consultants all around the world making money by installing our free software. We think that’s fantastic - we want them to be able to freely access the software and make money implementing it. More than that, we want to be able to point users to local experts so please let us know if you are a local expert selling NMIS services and which geography you are in – we are building the list right now.

How is Opmantek funded?

Opmantek has been given generous government assistance in Australia and has had 18 months of time and funds put in by founders. Hopefully many of you will purchase support services which will help further NMIS and not leave it all to the founders. The ultimate goal is that NMIS remains free, is rapidly enhanced by Opmantek, with Opmantek supplying the things the community has been seeking and asking to pay for – commercial support and customization in particular.
